What does Optimal Recovery mean?

With our Optimal Recovery Program, we rely on an interdisciplinary treatment plan that enables a quick and safe return to everyday life. We adapt the latest therapy standards individually to optimally support our patients’ recovery

Optimal recovery

The term “enhanced recovery” or “fast track” originally comes from general surgery and was first published at the turn of the millennium. At the time, the primary aim was to mobilize patients earlier by standardizing not only the operation itself, but also the entire treatment process and optimizing all treatment steps, thereby avoiding complications caused by bedridden patients. All unnecessary regulations and “old habits” were critically scrutinized and abolished where possible.

A few years ago, we began to set up an “Optimal Recovery Program” at Salem Hospital and have continued to develop it step by step. All aspects of the treatment process are optimized in an interdisciplinary collaboration between surgeons, anaesthetists, the nursing team, physiotherapy and administration.

The essential aspects of our Optimal Recovery Program consist of:

  • Standardized preparatory examination to optimize your health status
  • Comprehensive patient training (brochure, information event)
  • Optimized anaesthesia and pain concept
  • Standardized, tissue-sparing surgical technique
  • Interdisciplinary concept to prevent infections and bleeding
  • Standardized care and physiotherapy regimens
  • Early mobilization on the day of surgery
  • Omitting unnecessary treatment steps (drains, blood sampling, movement splints)
  • Optimized inpatient therapy processes
  • Close post-operative care

With these measures, we have significantly reduced the risk of complications and can get patients back on their feet more quickly. The length of hospital stay has been significantly shortened and the pain after the operation can also be reduced in this way.

This program is now an integral part of our Bern Prosthetic Center and is constantly adapted to the latest developments and findings and tailored to your personal needs.
