PD Dr. med. Tilman Calliess

Many years of experience from the university hospital

I have been working as a knee and hip specialist at the articon practice since September 2018. I have been the lead doctor in our team since 2023.

Before that, I worked for 12 years at the Annastift Orthopaedic University Clinic in Hanover, one of the most renowned orthopaedic clinics in Germany. I still have a teaching position there today and am habilitated at the Hannover Medical School.

I have specialized in prosthetics since 2012 and have performed over 2000 prosthetic operations. In 2013, I was also certified as a “main surgeon” for prosthetics, a seal of quality for prosthetic specialists in Europe. During my training, I was on fellowships in Australia and Vienna, Austria.

“My motivation is to enable people to lead a pain-free and active life again”

For years, my particular focus has been on the idea of improved, individualized prosthetic fitting. With my research group, I am working on a more natural alignment of artificial joints based on the individual joint anatomy. The aim is to enable a more natural movement sequence with an artificial joint, better stability and a more natural joint feeling. This approach was long considered revolutionary. However, we have shown that we can improve patient satisfaction as a result. Our philosophy has recently attracted more and more attention and we have now published this in numerous specialist and textbooks. It is important to me to enable patients to lead a pain-free and active life.

Pioneer for robot-assisted surgery

I have been working with robotic assistance systems in knee prosthetics since 2016 – as one of the first surgeons in Europe. This technology is particularly interesting for the aforementioned individualization of prosthetics, as it provides the surgeon with a lot of additional information and enables a high level of precision in the surgical procedure. I bring this experience to articon and am partly responsible for the fact that we are the first location in Switzerland to offer robot-assisted prosthetics.

Medical Director of the Bern Prosthetics Center

In 2022, we founded the Bern Prosthetics Center BPZ in cooperation with Hirslanden Bern – an association of specialists in the field of knee and hip prosthetics. The aim is to define common treatment standards and establish a regular medical exchange with a transparent error culture. I was elected Medical Director within the expert group. In 2023, we were certified as the first and only maximum care endoprosthetics center in Switzerland.
